EnteroScan®
An EnteroScan® is an examination of the small intestine using computed tomography (CT scan), a medical imaging procedure. This test is used to search for lesions and assess different diseases of the small intestine, such as Crohn’s disease and anemia. It also enables the imaging of other abdominal and pelvic organs.
Exam procedure
The patient must arrive 60 minutes before the appointment time. We will ask you to put on a gown and remove any jewelry and metallic objects that could affect the quality of the images.
- The patient will be given a liquid to drink prepared by the technologist (Lactulose diluted in water).
- The technologist will supervise the intake of the liquid. The solution is a laxative diluted in water.
- The patient should begin drinking the diluted solution 45 minutes before the appointment.
- The solution must be consumed within 30 minutes.
- Fifteen minutes before the start of the examination, the patient must lie on a stretcher on his or her right side to optimize gastric emptying. If the patient has not finished drinking, he or she may finish lying down.
- The technologist will install a catheter to inject an iodine-based contrast agent. As well, an antispasmodic called Buscopan may be injected.
- The technologist will then place you on the examination table, which will move slowly through the ring-shaped opening. It is important to remain still and follow the breathing instructions. The exam lasts about five minutes.
Preparation before exam:
- No fasting. You can have a light meal such as toast, cereal, or soup.
- You do not need to be accompanied.
A medical prescription is required to perform this examination. The cost of this examination is not covered by the Régie de l'assurance maladie du Québec (RAMQ).
