What is magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)?
A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a medical procedure that uses a magnetic field to create clear and detailed 2D or 3D images of body parts and internal organs. An MRI can capture data that cannot be collected by other technologies such as X-rays, ultrasounds, and CT scans.
Where can I have an MRI exam?
You can have a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) exam at one of our three Imagix clinics that provide this service in the Town of Mount-Royal, Châteauguay, and Sainte-Thérèse. Make sure you have your prescription on hand to make an appointment online or by phone.
When should I have an MRI exam?
An MRI exam is usually performed when the doctor suspects a problem that is difficult to detect during a physical check-up. An MRI exam is used to examine certain parts of the body and determine if you have a disease. To find out about the different types of MRI exams available at Imagix, consult our detailed section on magnetic resonance imaging.
How long does an MRI exam take?
The total duration of the visit can vary between 60 and 90 minutes, even if the exam itself only lasts 20 to 60 minutes, depending on the area of the body being examined.
Is MRI painful?
MRI is a painless, non-invasive medical imaging procedure. The MRI machine does not use X-rays. Instead, it relies on a magnetic field and radio-frequencies, providing a safe exam for patients. Having to remain still and feeling confined may make some claustrophobic patients uncomfortable. If a contrast agent must be injected, insertion of the catheter may also cause slight temporary discomfort.
How can I have an MRI exam if I am claustrophobic?
If you suffer from claustrophobia (anxiety or fear of small spaces), you may feel anxious during the MRI exam. Our technicians will show you simple and effective relaxation techniques, which can help you. Your healthcare professional may also prescribe an anti-anxiety medication, if needed. The MRI machines at the Mont-Royal, Châteauguay, and Sainte-Thérèse Imagix clinics have a 70 cm wide opening, which is 10 cm wider than standard MRI machines, for your comfort.
Are MRI exams covered by the RAMQ?
At Imagix, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) exams are not covered by the Régie de l’assurance maladie du Québec (RAMQ). The costs of this exam may, however, be covered by most private and group insurance plans. We recommend that you confirm the amount of coverage offered with your insurer.
How long does it take to get the results of an MRI exam?
The images are analyzed by a radiologist and then the results are sent to your attending physician within 2 to 3 business days of the procedure.
Is a medical prescription required for an MRI exam?
Yes, a medical prescription is required to have an MRI exam in Quebec.
Do you offer MRI services in Laval?
