What is magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)?
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) uses a magnetic field (no radiation or radioactive material) and radiofrequencies to create clear, detailed images (in 2D or 3D) of your body’s organs, bones, and soft tissues:
- brain
- the spine and the spinal cord
- musculo-skeletal system
- abdomen
- pelvic region
- arteriovenous system

Why have a magnetic resonance imaging exam?
A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) exam is prescribed to obtain very detailed images of the body, better understand the origin of certain symptoms, monitor disease progression, and further a medical diagnosis. For example, an MRI exam may be prescribed to:
- Detect the presence of tumours, cancers or infections
- Monitor the progression of inflammatory, autoimmune or neurodegenerative diseases
- Assess the efficacy of treatment
- Plan a surgical procedure
How is an MRI exam performed?
Before the exam
You will fill out a safety questionnaire with the technologist to ensure that there are no contradictions to the exam. You will be asked to remove any metal objects such as jewellery or accessories. Depending on the type of exam required, a contrast agent may need to be injected, but in most cases, no particular preparation is required.
During the exam
During the exam, you will lie on the exam table with the part of your body being examined positioned in the centre of the cylinder. The table will slide into the tunnel containing the scanning magnet. The inside of the unit is well lit and a fan circulates fresh air. Since MRI machines are noisy, you will be provided with hearing protection (headphones, earplugs) for your comfort.
During the exam, the technologist will communicate with you through the built-in intercom system to inform you of the various steps and ensure your well-being. You must remain still to ensure quality images. Please note that the total duration of the visit can vary between 60 and 90 minutes, even though the exam itself only lasts between 20 and 60 minutes.
After the exam
After the exam, you can resume your normal activities immediately, unless otherwise advised. The images are then analyzed by a radiologist and a report will be sent to your attending physician.

Specificities and Contraindications
If you suffer from claustrophobia (anxiety or fear of small spaces), you may feel some anguish during the MRI examination. Our technicians will show you simple and effective techniques for relaxation which can help you. For more severe cases, your health professionnal may prescribe an anxiolytic.
Tell the technologist if you have any objects in your body that have metal components, such as:
- aneurysm clips (vascular clips)
- pacemakers
- defibrillators
- insulin pumps
- neurostimulators
- cochlear implants
A medical prescription is required to perform this examination. The cost of this examination is not covered by the Régie de l'assurance maladie du Québec (RAMQ).
